Activision has finally addressed confusion surrounding crossplay in the newly released PlayStation versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2.
According to an update shared through the official Call of Duty channels, PS4 and PS5 users can play multiplayer together. This means players on both generations of PlayStation hardware will be placed in the same matchmaking pool.
The publisher also confirmed that owning a Season Pass will not separate players from those who only own the base game. Season Pass users and non-Season Pass players can still matchmake with each other.
However, the feature is limited to the PS4 and PS5 versions. Players using the original PS3 releases or other gaming platforms cannot join matches with users on the newer PlayStation ports.
The clarification arrived after days of uncertainty among the Call of Duty community. When Activision revealed that Iron Galaxy was working on bringing the classic Black Ops titles to modern PlayStation consoles, details about the ports remained limited.
That lack of information continued until the games unexpectedly appeared for purchase. Players quickly began questioning several technical aspects of the releases, including their resolution and frame-rate limitations.
Crossplay soon became another major talking point, as many initially believed PS4 and PS5 users were unable to play together. Activision's latest statement has now confirmed that cross-generation matchmaking is supported.
Despite the criticism surrounding the relatively basic nature of the ports, interest in both games appears to be strong. Black Ops and Black Ops 2 climbed into the PlayStation Store's best-selling rankings shortly after their release.
Both titles are currently listed at $39.99 each, while PlayStation Plus members can purchase them for $19.99 during a limited promotional period. DLC packages are also available separately, with discounted pricing offered to PS Plus subscribers.
The new releases may not include the major technical upgrades some fans hoped for, but the confirmation of PS4 and PS5 crossplay should make finding multiplayer matches easier for players returning to these classic Call of Duty games.
