Xbox Says GTA 6 Cloud Streaming Deal With Rockstar Is Non-Exclusive

Microsoft has cleared up speculation surrounding the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, confirming that its cloud streaming arrangement with Rockstar Games is not exclusive.

The clarification came after reports suggested that Xbox had secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for Rockstar’s highly anticipated open-world title. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball addressed the claims on X, saying that while the company is preparing for the game’s launch, the streaming agreement does not give Xbox exclusive access.

Ball also confirmed that GTA 6 is scheduled to arrive on Xbox Series X|S on November 19, although cloud streaming will not be offered on PC through the agreement.

The news has raised the possibility that Rockstar could eventually bring cloud streaming for GTA 6 to other platforms as well. Since Microsoft's deal is reportedly non-exclusive, services connected to Sony's ecosystem could potentially offer streaming support in the future, including on devices such as the PS5 or PlayStation Portal.

However, Rockstar Games and Microsoft have yet to officially announce the full details of their cloud gaming plans for GTA 6. At present, the game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Rockstar has not announced a PC release.

The confusion began after The Verge reported that Microsoft had reached an agreement with Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive concerning GTA 6 cloud streaming. The report claimed that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had discussed the deal during an internal meeting and hinted that Microsoft was preparing something related to the game that no other platform holder was offering.

Microsoft's latest comments suggest that the situation is less exclusive than initially reported. For now, Xbox appears to have secured cloud streaming rights for GTA 6, but Rockstar remains free to work with other platforms.
