For weeks, rumors have been circulating across gaming forums and social media that classic Call of Duty titles were heading to modern PlayStation systems. Now, Activision and Treyarch have officially confirmed what many fans already suspected: Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be released for newer PlayStation consoles this July.
The announcement was made by Treyarch on June 17 through X (formerly Twitter). According to the studio, both games are being brought over by Iron Galaxy, a developer well known for handling game ports. Players can expect the full package, including the single-player campaigns, multiplayer modes, and the fan-favorite Zombies experience.
Although reports and leaks hinted at the return of these titles earlier this month, some fans believed the games were being remastered or fully remade. Treyarch's wording suggests otherwise. The company has consistently referred to the projects as ports rather than remasters, indicating that the original experiences are being adapted for modern hardware rather than rebuilt from the ground up.
That means players should see improvements such as smoother performance and potentially higher resolutions, but major gameplay changes or extensive quality-of-life upgrades are unlikely. For many longtime fans, simply having easier access to these classics on current PlayStation hardware may be enough.
One lingering question concerns Xbox. Both Black Ops games can already be played on Xbox Series X|S through Microsoft's backward compatibility program. However, those older versions have long been criticized for issues such as hacked lobbies and limited enhancements compared to what modern hardware can offer. Since Microsoft now owns Activision, some players are hoping dedicated Xbox versions will also arrive in the future.
Pricing remains another mystery. Activision has not revealed how much the ports will cost, though some fans are concerned the company may charge a premium. Considering that the original digital version of Black Ops still sells for around $40 on Xbox platforms in 2026, a lower-budget price point is far from guaranteed.
For now, fans can look forward to revisiting two of the most celebrated entries in the Call of Duty franchise when they launch on PlayStation consoles later this July.
